Nunez should defuse situation

Share

Re “Mr. Nunez, who are you wining and dining?” Column, Oct. 10

There is a way to control politicians’ misuse of power and money: term limits. The logic of term limits is to prevent politicians from becoming entrenched and amassing inordinate power, which inevitably leads to corruption. Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez (D-Los Angeles) will be termed out next year, ending his reign of lavish boondoggle trips on gift money. Of course, to retain his perks and power, he already is conniving to change California’s term-limits law so he and others can hang on to their seats for many more years. Ronald Reagan warned us to beware of these kind of politicians when he said “concentrated power has always been the enemy of liberty.”

Nunez has said absolutely nothing to suggest that he wasn’t indulging in a giant spending spree with funds entrusted to him for an entirely different purpose: to elect Democrats. Worse, however, is that the speaker has handed the moribund California Republican Party fresh material for attack ads, better than any Democrat has given them in decades. Come on, Mr. Nunez, defuse this situation by making an honest effort to tell the voters what you were up to. Then say you’re sorry and don’t ever do it again.
