Sinking Hawaiian Superferry

Re “The battle of Kauai,” Column One, Oct. 9

Kauai is one of my favorite spots in the world, but I completely support the efforts of the protesters to slow down the destructive growth and development of their beautiful island. Stopping the Superferry may be just the beginning. Perhaps Hawaii can one day be returned to the Hawaiians.

You have done a disservice to the people of Kauai, in particular to Pierce Brosnan. He has given a great deal to this island, joining the effort to protect our island, giving both time and financial support. Your article suggests the Superferry will provide a cheap and convenient alternative. Here is an example: I booked two adults and two teenagers for six hours of travel time to spend a morning shopping in Honolulu. Cost for ferry: $787 with all available discounts. In August, the Hawaii Supreme Court ruled the state was wrong to exempt the ferry from an environmental study. Now, a Maui court has ruled that it cannot operate until an environmental study is done. It looks like we residents of Kauai were right.
