The Detroit Tigers on Monday acquired shortstop Edgar Renteria and cash from the Atlanta Braves for two prospects.

“We were able to address our biggest need, heading into the winter, with one of the best shortstops in the game,” said Dave Dombrowski, the club’s president and general manager.

Renteria, a five-time All-Star, hit .332 with 12 home runs and 57 runs batted in with the Braves.

In exchange for Renteria, 32, Detroit gave up right-hander Jair Jurrjens and minor league outfielder Gorkys Hernandez.

Jurrjens started seven games with Detroit last year and was 3-1 with a 4.70 earned-run average. He was 7-5 with a 3.20 ERA in 19 starts for double-A Erie.

Hernandez hit .293 with four homers, 50 RBIs and 54 steals at Class-A West Michigan.

In clearing room to add younger prospects -- and, potentially, free agents -- to their 40-man roster this winter, the Angels lost a pair of outfield prospects and a relief pitcher. There are now 37 players on the team’s 40-man roster.

Nick Gorneault, 28, who hit .261 with 19 home runs, 24 doubles, 59 RBIs and 82 runs in 128 games for triple-A Salt Lake this season, was claimed off waivers by the Texas Rangers.

Tommy Murphy, 28, who was slowed by injury and illness in 2007, and right-hander Marc Gwyn, 29, who appeared in three games for the Angels this season, cleared waivers and were removed from the roster, making them minor league free agents.
