* New York 9, at Toronto 2: Jason Giambi hit a grand slam, Jorge Posada added a solo homer and the Yankees won their sixth in a row. Giambi, who was two for 27 in his last 10 games, went one for three, walking and scoring in the second inning. The grand slam was his first of the season and 12th of his career.

* Minnesota 6, at Kansas City 3: Scott Baker beat the Royals for the third time this season and extended the Royals’ losing streak to seven games. Baker improved to 3-0 with a 1.59 ERA in three starts against the Royals this year, with 20 strikeouts and two walks in 22 2/3 innings.

* Oakland 7, at Seattle 4: The free-falling Mariners lost for the 15th time in 17 games. Mark Ellis tied a career high with four hits, and Mike Piazza and Shannon Stewart each had three hits and two runs batted in for the Athletics.

* Texas 13-1, at Detroit 6-4: Jair Jurrjens gave up one run over five innings to help the Tigers salvage a split of the doubleheader. Marlon Byrd hit two of the Rangers’ seven homers in their win in the opener. Texas had not hit seven homers in a game since getting eight on June 30, 2005, against the Angels.

* Cleveland 8, at Chicago 3: Paul Byrd got his 15th victory and Travis Hafner had three RBIs as the surging Indians won for the 15th time in 18 games. Byrd (15-6) gave up three runs and six hits in 6 1/3 innings, including two homers by Juan Uribe. Byrd had a career-best 17 wins for Kansas City in 2002.

* at Boston 16, Tampa Bay 10: With the season-high 16 runs, the Red Sox ensured they’ll still be in first place even if they’re swept by New York in their three-game series this weekend.

* Angels 10, at Baltimore 5: Vladimir Guerrero returned from a four-game absence and hit two home runs.
