The superintendent of the San Diego Unified School District announced Wednesday that he is leaving his job by year’s end, 18 months before his contract expires.

Carl A. Cohn, 61, became superintendent of the 133,000-student district in July 2005. He worked 10 years as superintendent of the Long Beach district.

Cohn’s decision surprised school board members.

No illnesses related to the contamination have been reported in California.

Beaches closed to protect shorebirds set to reopen

The last Western snowy plover chick has fledged, allowing an early reopening of Vandenberg Air Force Base beaches.

The military officially opened all sections of Surf and Wall beaches Saturday.

The closed section of Minuteman Beach opens this weekend.

Beach restrictions are enforced seven months of the year -- March 1 through Sept. 30 -- on Wall, Minuteman and Surf beaches to protect the shorebirds during breeding season.
