Happy to help feed the hungry

Re “Hunger on the rise in L.A. County,” Sept. 23

It disturbs me that people go hungry in my city. I know I often have surplus food (my tomato and vegetable garden alone produces way more than I and my friends can consume). Every year in Pasadena on Thanksgiving, an organization coordinates people dropping off prepared and bought food and distributes it to hungry families. Can’t this be done on a wider, more consistent level? I personally would be willing and able to do this at least four times a month, and if I am, I would bet there are thousands of others who would as well.

There must be a way to coordinate all of us who have more than enough to be able to share with those who have less, on an ongoing, grass-roots basis. This would be better than giving money to organizations, where the red tape eats up or diverts many of the potential benefits from the needy to the greedy.
