Galaxy wins one on road
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Gavin Glinton, a second-half substitute for Cobi Jones, scored on a header deep in the penalty area and led the Galaxy to a 1-0 victory over the Kansas City Wizards on Thursday night.
In the 80th minute, Glinton took a long pass up from teammate Mike Randolph and redirected the ball with his head from five yards into the right corner of the net and past a fallen Wizards goalkeeper Kevin Hartman for his third goal of the season.
The victory was the first for the Galaxy on the road since Aug. 6, 2006, improving its record to 6-13-6 with 24 points and keeping alive its chances of making the Major League Soccer playoffs.
The Wizards, meanwhile, lost for the fourth time in six games, slipped to 10-11-6 and, with 36 points remained in precarious position for the playoffs.
The Wizards spent much of the first half knocking the ball around the Galaxy penalty area but had only one shot on goal.
Kansas City suffered a huge blow in the 57th minute when defender Jimmy Conrad slid in late on a tackle on the Galaxy’s Peter Vagenas and received a red card, forcing the Wizards to play the last 33 minutes a man down.
The crowd of 32,867 was the largest to see an MLS match at Arrowhead Stadium. Most of those fans had bought tickets in anticipation of seeing David Beckham before the Galaxy midfielder injured his knee late last month.
