Classic confusion
Jim Morin’s portrayal of whining Democrats could have been limited to two or three. But no, he jammed in as many as would fit. Dems should ask themselves: If they look like this to a cartoonist, what must they look like to regular people? Ben Sargent’s congressional Democrats obviously don’t seem to care. Between his passed-out lout and Morin’s whining Dems, the triumph of politics is pretty much condemned. Pat Oliphant’s cartoon is notable because of the classic grace of the lines of the Statue of Liberty. The point is that freedom of speech has to be guaranteed to all, even a noisome fool like Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, if it is to be guaranteed to anyone. Thus the statue’s inherent beauty has to be accurately drawn, to contrast with this captious little strutter.
