Boston 5, at Oakland 0: Jon Lester pitched three-hit ball into the seventh inning and David Ortiz broke open a scoreless game with a two-run home run in the seventh. Jason Varitek homered in the ninth for the Red Sox.

Kansas City 4, at Detroit 0: Brian Bannister and two relievers combined on a three-hitter for the Royals. Edgar Renteria had all three of the Tigers’ hits.

Toronto 5, at New York 2: A.J. Burnett overpowered the Yankees for six-plus innings and Vernon Wells hit a two-run home run for the Blue Jays. Alex Rodriguez hit a two-run homer for New York.

at Baltimore 9, Tampa Bay 6: Aubrey Huff drove in four runs for the Orioles.

at Cleveland 7, Chicago 2: Fausto Carmona gave up a run and four singles in seven innings and Grady Sizemore had three runs batted in for the Indians. Carmona got 16 of his 21 outs on grounders.

at Seattle 4, at Texas 1: Carlos Silva gave up three hits and one run in his Mariners debut, Jose Lopez hit a three-run homer and No. 5 starter Miguel Batista got his first save in three years. Batista pitched in relief because Seattle’s All-Star closer, J.J. Putz, was put on the 15-day disabled list with a rib-cage injury.

Angels 1, at Minnesota 0: Joe Saunders threw eight shutout innings and Howie Kendrick scored on a wild pitch in the seventh.
