Shine a light

FLIP through spring catalogs and you’ll probably spot this trend: lighting that takes its cues from vintage film and photography equipment.

It’s easy to see why the designs are popular: The retro vibe allows these lamps to fit in nicely with traditional interiors; the clean lines work equally well in modern homes.

They’re practical too. Some of these designs can throw directional lighting on artwork or shine just the right glow over a reading nook. Floor lamps are often set atop adjustable bases so that the bulb can be raised or lowered for the most complimentary effect. Some are even equipped with diffusers that cast the sort of compassionate illumination a Botox-brimming Hollywood has-been could appreciate.
