The professional tennis tournament held in Indian Wells is seeking a new title sponsor after ending its seven-year relationship with Pacific Life Insurance Co. of Newport Beach.

The former Pacific Life Open, held at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden, drew more than 300,000 spectators during this year’s two-week event in March, making it one of the most attended non-Grand Slam events in the world.

Tournament director Steve Simon said Thursday that “the parting of ways with Pacific Life was mutual and strategic,” because the event is seeking a replacement sponsor that has the international reach of the tournament.

“We’re currently very active in the marketplace and getting some very strong interest” from potential sponsors, Simon said, adding that the tournament was prepared to hold its event again next March 9-22 even if a title sponsor had not yet been found.

Novak Djokovic won the 2008 men’s title, and Ana Ivanovic won the women’s title.
