Council OKs mayor’s plan to save water

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s crackdown on excessive water usage was approved Friday by the City Council.

The “drought buster” plan drafted by the Department of Water and Power seeks to bar utility customers from watering their lawns between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and washing their cars without “shut-off devices” on their hoses. Restaurants that serve water without patrons’ requests will also be penalized.

The DWP plan will double fines for residents and quadruple them for businesses. Under the plan, a team of 16 “drought busters” will issue fines to those who are caught violating the new laws two or more times.
