Cilic defeats Fish for title

Marin Cilic won his first ATP Tour event Saturday, beating eighth-seeded Mardy Fish, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, in the Pilot Pen at New Haven, Conn.

The 19-year-old Cilic, who was seeded sixth, broke the hard-serving Fish five times -- three times in the final set -- to clinch the victory in his first finals appearance. Fish was trying for his third career win, and first since 2006.

In the women’s draw, Caroline Wozniacki posted her second tournament victory this month, defeating top-seeded Anna Chakvetadze, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Wozniacki dominated the third set, breaking Chakvetadze in the fourth and sixth games before serving out the match.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Miami quarterback suspended

Miami quarterback Robert Marve has been suspended for the season opener for an incident from last year, the Miami Herald reported on its website.

Marve was expected to be named the starter for the Hurricanes for Thursday night’s game against Charleston Southern.

The redshirt freshman was arrested Oct. 31 for smashing a car mirror. He was initially charged with two misdemeanors, but they were later lifted.

Hawaii, Mexico reach title game

Tanner Tokunaga doubled home two runs with two out and the bases loaded to cap a six-run sixth inning that gave Waipahu, Hawaii, a 7-5 victory over Lake Charles, La., for the United States title at South Williamsport, Pa.

Hawaii’s opponent today in the championship game will be Matamoros, Mexico, which defeated Tokyo, 5-4, for the international title.

Fulham beats Arsenal, 1-0

Dallas-born defender Brede Hangeland helped Fulham defeat English Premier League title hopeful Arsenal, 1-0, at London.

Hangeland, the captain of Norway’s national team, scored off Jimmy Bullard’s low cross in the 21st minute.

In another Premier League match, Steven Gerrard scored in the fourth minute of injury time to give Liverpool a 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough.

Burnquist wins skateboard vert

Bob Burnquist won the skateboard vert event for his first AST Dew Tour victory of the season in the Wendy’s Invitational at Portland, Ore.

He clinched the win on his final run with back-to-back combo tricks, to finish at 91.25. Pierre-Luc Gagnon was second at 89.75, followed by Bucky Lasek at 86.50.

LACROSSE

Riptide loses in semifinals

The L.A. Riptide lost to the Denver Outlaws, 13-12, in the Major League Lacrosse championship semifinals at Boston. Rookie attackman Kevin Huntley led the Riptide with three goals, including a two-pointer. The Rochester Rattlers beat the Philadelphia Barrage, 16-15, in overtime, and will face the Outlaws today for the title.

PASSINGS

Cornish, 41, UCLA All-American

Frank Cornish, an All-America football center at UCLA, died in his sleep Friday in Southlake, Texas. He was 41. The cause of death was not known.

Cornish started 35 games for the Bruins and was selected a first-team All-American as a senior in 1989. He is survived by his wife, Robin, and their five children.
