Thick fog disrupted flights Sunday morning at San Diego International Airport, an airport spokeswoman said.

Diana Lucero said the Federal Aviation Administration issued a “ground stop” for about 45 minutes because of the soupy conditions that caused air traffic to back up and created a long security line at one of the airport’s two terminals. She said planes in the air that were scheduled to land in San Diego were diverted.

Southwest Airlines spokeswoman Olga Romeo said 40 of the airline’s arriving and departing flights were affected by the ground stop.
