Year after disappointing year the plea is heard from Westwood, “If only we beat the Trojans.”

In last Sunday’s L.A. Times, David Wharton quotes Rick Neuheisel as saying, “This is the USC game. This is plenty enough. When you come to UCLA, bowl games are terrific, but they’re icing on the cake. The excitement is this game.”

This is exactly what’s wrong with Bruins football -- they can accept being a losing program year after year if only they beat the Trojans. The Bruins suffer from a serious inferiority complex when it comes to USC that they refuse to admit. Not only are they gutty little Bruins, they’re also very angry and attack USC verbally at every chance. If UCLA was less obsessed with USC football they might actually turn that program around one day.

If the Bruins’ offense can find a way to keep the Trojans out of the end zone, they just might have a chance.

Am I missing something? Is UCLA’s Rick Neuheisel the same guy who was offensive coordinator of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens the last couple of years? The same Ravens who were inept on offense until this year after Neuheisel left? The Ravens were always known for their defense, kind of like UCLA under defensive coordinator DeWayne Walker.

Some may give Slick Rick a pass on this season, but remember his records elsewhere were better his first two seasons in both cases.

UCLA’s defense held Arizona State to six points and 121 yards of offense.

Guess that is enough said about both the offense and defense when the final score was Arizona State 34, UCLA 9.

I will be looking forward to next year, when Coach Neuheisel can start to stock the shelves with his players, and have the team play a second year with the same offensive coordinator.

If Coach Sarkisian needs cab fare to LAX on the way to Seattle, I got it.

Sarkisian has taken a confident, great athlete in Mark Sanchez and in the span of one season, has apparently created the next John David Booty.
