Tying up loose ends, ‘The Hills’ seems to have peaked

With finales like these, do we really need a fifth season of “The Hills”? MTV hasn’t given the go-ahead, in spite of what certain cast members have said to the contrary. But now that we’ve seen the goods in Monday’s finale, we kind of think maybe another 20 episodes are not necessary.

There was closure all around! It’s almost as though MTV or Lauren or whoever “The Hills’ ” powers-that-be are ordered the cast members to sew up their story lines, and pronto.

Also, with Whitney Port’s “The City” revving up for a premiere next week, Lauren looked down for the count by comparison. Whitney’s beaming in the ads for the new show, while Lauren on Monday looked ready to leave the cameras behind.

Actually, didn’t that whole episode seem tailored to serve as a launch pad for a countdown to “I do” for the soon-to-be Mr. and Mrs. Pratt? A reality show following the planning of Heidi’s dream wedding perhaps?

I don’t know. I could be wrong, but the evidence was there. Just take a look at what happened:

Lauren and Heidi made peace. They’re still not best friends, but for a few minutes, Lauren melted after hearing Heidi open up about the troubles that her elopement had caused between her and Mama Montag. They hugged, they cried, they told each other they were missed. They really did look relieved. And as far as the finale went, that was it for Lauren. No friends lurking, waiting to backstab her. Just a content Lo, happy to tag along with Lauren for as long as she’ll have her.

Justin Bobby gave his pinky ring to Audrina. After she accused him of cheating with Lauren, Audrina allowed herself to be swept away by Justin Bobby once more. He took her to Palm Springs, offered to split a filet mignon with her, and then bestowed her with his pinky ring. Monogamy, here he comes! Maybe.

Spencer played the good guy. Right when you thought Heidi and Spencer were really going to tie the knot this time, Spencer decided that maybe his tequila-fueled tactics weren’t all that fair. After Heidi promised herself to him in an L.A. courthouse, he stopped the ceremony and told her that they could wait to get married and that Heidi could have the traditional wedding with her family that she told him she wanted two seasons ago.

Not a cliffhanger in sight.
