Beatles will head into space

“Across the Universe” indeed.

That’s just where the Beatles song is going. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the recording of that tune, NASA plans to beam the song into space on Monday, using its Deep Space Network to aim in the direction of Polaris, the North Star.

NASA has been transmitting music skyward since 1965, but only for astronauts on space missions. The agency said Thursday that this is the first time it will be broadcasting for all the universe to hear.

Former Beatle Paul McCartney issued a statement calling the broadcast “amazing” and said, “Well done, NASA! Give my love to the aliens.”

Organizers are hoping Beatles fans will get involved by playing “Across the Universe” at the same time as NASA’s transmission (4 p.m. Pacific). Details are at www.acrosstheuniverseday.com.
