These Paths Aren’t Pedestrian

Only in L.A. would something as simple as walking be turned into a way to brand yourself (“Walk This Way,” by Steffie Nelson, The Status Report, Jan. 6). I’m glad Runyon Canyon is no longer the It place to walk. It has some of the best views, and all those hipsters polluting it with their presence mar its natural beauty.

It was encouraging to read that “walking is definitely ‘in’ now.” Hopefully, the cool factor can be infused into walking to school again. It’s taking a worldwide campaign to get kids to walk to school as in the good old days. Check out www.walktoschool.org. How “old school!”
We’ve initiated Walk to School Wednesdays in our city as part of the global campaign. Parents are encouraged to walk with their younger kids--and get a little exercise themselves. As for teens, it’s a challenge to get them to change their habits, but walking does have several purposes: It fights childhood obesity, reduces traffic and pollution and promotes driver awareness of pedestrians.
