‘Living wage’ law is appealed

Share

Attorneys filed an appeal Tuesday of a ruling that upheld a “living wage” law for employees of hotels along Century Boulevard near Los Angeles International Airport.

Two months ago, a three-judge panel upheld the Los Angeles City Council’s decision to pass the law, which was approved after the hotels attempted to force the issue onto the municipal election ballot.

Business leaders complained about the law. But after they collected 100,000 signatures to challenge it, the City Council rewrote the ordinance and passed it again without taking it to the voters.

Tuesday’s appeal asks the California Supreme Court to review the ruling. Ruben Gonzalez, a spokesman for the hotels, said the Dec. 27 ruling threatens future efforts to put measures on local ballots. “This reversal of this century-old right should be reviewed by the highest court in our state to protect the right of citizen participation,” he said.
