11. As a homage to the Colony Palms Hotel’s original owner, Purple Gang-ster Al Wertheimer, interior designer Martyn Lawrence-Bullard created the Purple Palm restaurant as part of his restoration of the 1930s Palm Spring resort. With a color palette of eggplant and olive on button tufted banquettes, dining chairs and bronzed lighting fixtures lined in vellum with silk fringe, Lawrence-Bullard pulled together a look that includes area rugs created from custom-colored concrete tiles. For the crowning touch, he commissioned fashion photographer Deborah Anderson to shoot Venice Beach palm trees at sunset, added a dramatic lilac tint to the sky and created the room’s landscapes. “It really was just an experiment,” the designer says, “but with a little imagination and a large printer, anyone can turn their favorite photo into wallpaper.” 572 N.
