At least 13 Maoist rebels and six paramilitary soldiers were killed Monday in renewed fighting in eastern India, days after coordinated rebel attacks killed 13 police officers and two civilians.

Monday’s fierce clash took place in the Bijapur district of Chattisgarh state, about 200 miles southwest of the state capital, Raipur, said Rajinder Kumar Vij, a state police official. Other details were not available.

Meanwhile, government troops scoured forests in the eastern state of Orissa for Maoist rebels and reported having killed as many as 20 since the militants attacked government targets late last week, officials said Sunday.
