DUCK AND COVER

In 1942, this very Times covered a World War II air raid that in all likelihood never happened. For hours, authorities blacked out the city of Los Angeles while a barrage of (largely benign) friendly fire assailed the heavens over 40 miles of SoCal coastline, battling . . . the Japanese? Aliens? Ninety-nine luft balloons? To this day, nobody knows, but that’s no reason not to trot out your best 1940s duds and revisit the scene at San Pedro’s former military installation, the Ft. MacArthur Museum, during its sixth annual Great Los Angeles Air Raid of 1942 dance. Featuring Jonathon Stout’s swing band, loud bangs, suitably ambiguous special effects and host Maxwell DeMille. 6 p.m. Sat. 3601 S. Gaffey St. $20. (310) 548-2631; www.ftmac .org
