Weather halts flights, kills 1
Winter gales raged across northeastern Japan, grounding dozens of flights and causing huge waves that flooded coastal homes, drowned a fisherman and swept an octogenarian out to sea, officials said.
In Imizu, a fishing town in northern Toyama prefecture, a 72-year-old fisherman was swept overboard and drowned, prefectural official Jun Shimada said.
In Nyuzen, a man in his 80s was swept away as he walked along a coastal road watching the waves, Shimada said.
Sudden high waves jumped a breakwater in Kurobe, damaging about 80 houses, Shimada said.
