Ireland new GM in Miami

Jeff Ireland has rejoined Bill Parcells to help revive the Miami Dolphins.

Ireland, who spent the past seven years in player personnel with the Dallas Cowboys, was hired Wednesday as Dolphins general manager. He replaces the fired Randy Mueller.

Parcells, the Cowboys’ coach from 2003 to ‘06, joined the Dolphins two weeks ago as executive vice president of football operations.

Coach Mike Nolan will return to the San Francisco 49ers next season despite a 16-32 record in his first three years, but he will lose total control of football operations after Scot McCloughan was promoted to general manager. McCloughan had been the top personnel executive.

Nolan also fired offensive coordinator Jim Hostler.

As expected, the Detroit Lions fired Mike Martz after two years as offensive coordinator.

Martz will be replaced by Jim Colletto, who will remain offensive line coach while calling plays. Receivers coach Kippy Brown will be co-coordinator.

The Cincinnati Bengals fired defensive coordinator Chuck Bresnahan and linebackers coach Ricky Hunley.

Bresnahan was with the Bengals for four seasons. Hunley had been linebackers coach for the past five seasons.

The Kansas City Chiefs fired offensive coordinator Mike Solari and three other assistants following a 4-12 season. Solari was joined by offensive line coach John Matsko, receivers coach Charlie Joiner and running backs coach James Saxon.

The Pittsburgh Steelers promoted offensive lineman Jonathan Parquet from their practice squad and signed rookie offensive lineman Jason Capizzi for the second time.

The Steelers made the moves after losing starting tackles Marvel Smith (back) and Max Starks (knee) to injuries.

Tennessee Titans quarterback Vince Young practiced on a limited basis but lost one of his favorite targets when tight end Bo Scaife (lacerated liver) was placed on injured reserve.

Young hopes to start in Sunday’s playoff game at San Diego despite a sore right quadriceps. Scaife was injured Sunday against Indianapolis.

Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson ran away with the Associated Press NFL offensive rookie-of-the-year voting, finishing with 46 1/2 votes from a nationwide panel of 50 media members. Cleveland tackle Joe Thomas was the only other player receiving votes, 3 1/2 .

Peterson, who set the league mark for rushing in a game with 296 yards, led the NFC with 1,341 yards rushing.

Wide receiver Marvin Harrison returned to practice and could play in the Indianapolis Colts’ playoff game next week. He has missed 11 games since bruising his left knee on Sept. 30.
