Jones steps down at Hawaii

June Jones resigned Saturday as Hawaii’s coach, according to the Honolulu Advertiser, and he is scheduled to interview today with Southern Methodist about its opening.

The Dallas Morning News reported SMU has offered Jones between $1.7 million and $2 million a year. Jones currently earns $800,016 a year under a five-year contract with Hawaii that expires June 30.

Ray Rice ran for 280 yards and four touchdowns to lead Rutgers (8-5) to a 52-30 victory over Ball State (7-6) in the International Bowl at Toronto. . . . The Chicago Tribune reported that Illinois running back Rashard Mendenhall is likely to give up his final season of eligibility and make himself available for the NFL draft. Mendenhall rushed for 155 yards and had 59 receiving in Illinois’ 49-17 loss to USC in the Rose Bowl. College underclassmen have until Jan. 15 to make themselves available for the draft and until Jan. 19 to withdraw their name. . . . Texas A&M; tight end Martellus Bennett said he will skip his final season of eligibility and enter the draft. . . . Michigan State junior wide receiver Devin Thomas also made himself eligible for the draft.
