Winning conference road games at Stanford and California to start the Pacific 10 Conference season did not move UCLA up in the weekly college basketball polls released Monday.

The Bruins (14-1, 2-0) remained fifth in both the Associated Press media and ESPN/USA Today coaches’ polls, though they gained ground on fourth-ranked Washington State. Last week in the AP poll, UCLA trailed Washington State by 35 points -- 1,534 to 1,499. This week, UCLA had 1,522 points, only 10 behind Washington State.

In the coaches’ poll last week, Washington State had a 21-vote advantage, 670-649. This week, the margin is 15, 670-655.

The Bruins play host to Washington State on Saturday after facing Washington on Thursday. The Cougars play at USC on Thursday.

The Trojans and Arizona dropped out of the AP poll. USC was swept by California and Stanford in two close games, and Arizona split against Oregon State and Oregon, losing to the Ducks while playing without standout freshman point guard Jerryd Bayless, who has a sprained knee.

Each poll had the same top six: North Carolina at the top followed by Memphis and Kansas, with Michigan State sixth behind UCLA.

Georgetown, Tennessee, Duke and Indiana finished out the AP top 10; Duke, Georgetown, Tennessee and Texas A&M; rounded out the coaches’ top 10.

Xavier and Miami moved back into the AP poll, replacing Arizona and USC.

In the coach’s poll, St. Mary’s dropped out after a loss to Texas and was replaced by Xavier.

Junior forward Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, who had reported a sore right knee Saturday after colliding with teammate Russell Westbrook late in the California game, has only a bruise.

UCLA didn’t practice Monday, but Mbah a Moute is expected to be at full strength when the Bruins return to work today in preparation for games against Washington and Washington State, both at Pauley Pavilion.
