A reflection of urban reality

THANK you, Matea Gold, for your article on “The Wire” [“Right Down to ‘The Wire’,” Jan. 6]! I am an avid fan and think it’s blasphemy that the show hasn’t received more recognition.

“The Wire” is by far one of the most important and well-written shows on television. The writers get it right so much that it’s scary. I am an actress, and from an artistic standpoint, I think the acting is riveting. But even further, from a social standpoint, the show speaks the truth about what is happening not only in Baltimore, but other cities like Chicago, Detroit, Washington and I’m sure Los Angeles to some extent.

Last season about the school system was excellent. Both of my parents are educators in urban school districts, and they confirmed that the story lines were indeed real. The majority of people don’t want to face the truth when it comes to social ills, especially if it doesn’t impact their daily existence, but the problems that face Baltimore and other cities should touch each one of our souls at the core level to ignite change. I applaud the show’s creator, David Simon, for tackling this challenge.
