AFI divides its Top 100 list

The Hollywood outfit that loves to list the best in American cinema plans to pick the top 10 movies in 10 genres, including science fiction, animation, mysteries and westerns.

The American Film Institute announced Thursday that its annual Top 100 list will be broken into the series of 10-best rankings. The other genres are fantasy, gangster tales, sports flicks, romantic comedies, courtroom dramas and epic films.

The results of this year’s Top 10 lists will be revealed on a CBS special in June. The Top 10 lists will be decided from a field of 50 films in each genre in ballots sent to about 1,500 filmmakers, actors, critics and others.
