Ballot suit joined by Kern County

Kern County has joined a lawsuit filed by San Diego County against the California secretary of state over how to count certain ballots.
San Diego County’s registrar of voters is seeking to set aside rules requiring counties using electronic voting machines to do a mandatory hand count of 10% of the ballots in close election races.
State law now requires a manual hand count of 1% of the precincts in the county to check for voting problems.
Secretary of State Debra Bowen said officials are merely trying to ensure the security and accuracy of the voting system. California’s presidential primary is Feb. 5.
