UCLA women rally to defeat Oregon, 63-59

The UCLA women’s basketball team rallied from an 11-point deficit with about seven minutes left Thursday night and defeated Oregon, 63-59, at Pauley Pavilion.

With the victory, the Bruins, 10-9 overall and 5-3 in the Pacific 10 Conference, remained tied for fourth in the league with USC.

Lindsey Pluimer, the only senior for UCLA, matched her season high with 19 points and freshman guard Darxia Morris returned from a knee injury and scored six of her eight points in the second half.

The Bruins shot a season-low 32.8% from the field but picked up the defensive pressure with about seven minutes remaining and forced 10 turnovers during the deciding 20-5 run.

Oregon (10-9, 4-4) scored 13 of the final 15 first-half points to take a 30-24 halftime lead. Morris made her first appearance since injuring her right knee Jan. 6 in an overtime loss to visiting California. She made a jumper on her first attempt but played only three minutes in the first half.

Oregon junior guard Tamika Nurse injured her left shoulder while fouling Erica Tukiainen with 14:04 left in the first half and did not return.

Kaela Chapdelaine, the only senior for the Ducks, scored 16 points, but did not make another basket after making consecutive three-pointers to give Oregon a 41-29 lead with 16:05 remaining.

USC 59, Oregon State 47 -- Brynn Cameron made a couple of big shots to help propel the Trojan women to the victory at the Galen Center.

Cameron answered a seven-point run by Oregon State (10-9, 3-5) with a three-pointer with 54 seconds left in the first half to give USC a 26-21 lead. USC (12-7, 5-3) then scored 10 of the first 11 points of the second half for a 39-24 advantage.

Freshman center Kari LaPlante scored a career-high 13, and sophomore guard Hailey Dunham scored 10 while playing four of the five positions.

MEN

Pacific 71, UC Santa Barbara 58 -- Chad Troyer made six three-pointers and scored a career-high 27 points at Santa Barbara.

The Tigers (14-5, 5-1 in the Big West) shot 59.5% and outrebounded the Gauchos, 37-27, with Anthony Brown getting a double-double of 12 rebounds and 10 points. The Gauchos (14-5, 3-3) shot just 24.1% in the first half. Alex Harris, who had been ill all week, led the Gauchos with 15 points.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 79, UC Davis 67 -- Senior forward Dreshawn Vance had 19 points including seven dunks for the Mustangs at San Luis Obisipo.

Junior guards Chaz Thomas and Trae Clark each had 16 points while sophomore guard Lorenzo Keeler contributed 10 points as the Mustangs (7-11, 2-4 in the Big West) ended a three-game losing streak.

UC Davis (8-11, 2-4) was led by Shane Hanson with 19 points and eight rebounds.
