British diplomat Paddy Ashdown said Sunday that he had withdrawn from consideration for a U.N. post as a “super envoy” to Afghanistan after Afghan officials objected.

Ashdown had been backed by the U.S. and Britain as coordinator of international aid and political efforts in Afghanistan.

President Hamid Karzai raised objections in meetings with British Prime Minister Gordon Brown and U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, the Times of London reported.
