Gunmen opened fire on two men talking in front of a Compton liquor store Tuesday afternoon, killing one of them and wounding the other, authorities said.
Julio Valdez Arteaga, 18, was pronounced dead by paramedics after he was shot at the store in the 2800 block of Santa Fe Avenue. Arteaga, of Lynwood, was hit several times in the upper body, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Oscar Butao.
His companion, described by authorities as a 20-year-old Latino male, was shot in the leg and taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.
Butao said two or three men approached Arteaga and his friend about 4:15 p.m. and “without provocation” began shooting.
Anyone with information is asked to call homicide detectives at (323) 890-5500.
