* St. Louis 11, at Pittsburgh 6: Aaron Miles drove in five runs with a home run and a triple, and the Cardinals held off the Pirates, who cut the deficit to 6-5 on Chris Gomez’s two-run double in the sixth inning.

* Houston 5, at Washington 0: Brandon Backe (6-9) pitched seven-plus innings to help beat the Nationals, who were shut out for a major league-high 12th time.

* at Philadelphia 6, Arizona 3: Pat Burrell hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the eighth inning and the Phillies held their National League East lead heading into the All-Star break. The Diamondbacks still lead the NL West.

* at Milwaukee 3, Cincinnati 2: After giving up a run in the second inning and one in the third, CC Sabathia (2-0) shut down the Reds, striking out nine batters, all from the fourth inning on. Craig Counsell hit a game-winning sacrifice fly in the ninth.
