A man convicted of killing a 2-year-old girl in a case that shook Los Angeles County’s foster care system was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years to life in prison, prosecutors said.

Armando Abundis Sr., 35, of Alhambra was convicted in February of involuntary manslaughter and child abuse resulting in the death of Sarah Chavez. The girl died in October 2005 from multiple traumatic injuries, including a severe blow to her abdomen.

Abundis’ wife, Frances, the child’s aunt, pleaded no contest to being an accessory to Sarah’s death. She is scheduled to be sentenced to 16 months in prison this month.
