The New Jersey Nets acquired guard Keyon Dooling from the Orlando Magic in a sign-and-trade deal.

In exchange for Dooling, the Nets gave the Magic cash and the trade exception they got in the deal that sent Jason Kidd to the Dallas Mavericks.

“Keyon is a versatile NBA veteran, and we are pleased to add him to our roster,” Nets President Rod Thorn said. “His ability to play both the point and shooting guard positions will add flexibility and depth to our backcourt rotation.”

Dooling averaged 8.1 points, 1.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 72 games for Orlando last season.

The eight-year NBA veteran has appeared in 465 games with the Clippers, Heat and Magic, holding career averages of 6.8 points, 1.3 rebounds and 1.9 assists.

The NBA appointed Bernie Fryer and Joe Borgia to new positions and reassigned Ronnie Nunn in a series of moves to restructure its referees program.

Fryer, who officiated nearly 1,700 games in his 28-year career, was promoted from assistant director of officials to vice president and director of officials.

Borgia becomes vice president of referee operations, responsible for areas such as the recruitment and training programs for the officials.

Nunn, the director of officials the last five years, will now report to Fryer as director of development, dealing with less experienced referees.

The Boston Celtics re-signed guards Eddie House and Tony Allen, two role players from their title-winning team. Terms were not disclosed.

House averaged 7.5 points in 19 minutes during the regular season, and Allen averaged 6.6 points.

The Celtics lost sixth man James Posey to free agency last week, but Monday’s deals give the team a chance to return most of its key players when it goes for an 18th title next season. All five starters are under contract, and only injured Scot Pollard and veterans P.J. Brown and Sam Cassell are left on the market.
