Midnight Snack

Manhattan has always been the place for late-night cravings. But late is getting even later these days--in part because the island (and for some reason, especially the West Side) is aswarm with Europeans. Post-midnight gadabouts have been flocking to Daniel Boulud’s Bar Boulud since the glamorous wine bar, which opened in January across from Lincoln Center, extended its hours several weeks ago (acquiescing to eager would-be patrons who kept knocking on the doors after closing). Now, from midnight to 1 a.m., you can get wine, a selection of cheeses and charcutier Gilles Verot’s pates and terrines--such as pate grand-pere (country pate with foie gras, truffle juice and Port). On a recent Saturday after midnight, every seat in the house was taken, David Bowie’s “Heroes” was on the soundtrack, and an orchestra member’s cello was propped against the backlighted gravel wall. Diners had to be practically forced out when, close to 2 a.m.--in nightclub style --the lights were turned all the way up and the music turned off.
