Modern life in all its transcultural, cosmopolitan complexity is captured in this quietly spectacular film by Turkish German director Fatih Akin (“Head-On”). A Turkish father and his assimilated German son; a Turkish mother working in Germany and her angry daughter back home in Istanbul; a bourgeois German woman who once yearned for exotic foreign adventures; and the daughter who yearns for them to all come together. The film moves in unexpected ways but with tragic consequences. “The Edge of Heaven” is a deeply humanistic story about generational expectations and cultural shifts, superbly shot and acted, directed by a master storyteller.
