Kemp awaits word after shoving match

The altercation involving Matt Kemp and Colorado Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba on Tuesday night is being reviewed by Bob Watson, baseball’s vice president of on-field operations, according to a spokesman for the commissioner’s office. A decision is expected today.

Kemp and Torrealba got into a shoving match that resulted in the clearing of both teams’ benches.

Asked if he expected Kemp to be suspended, Manager Joe Torre said, “With the climate of what’s happened in the recent past, it wouldn’t surprise me.”

Torre said that if Kemp is suspended, Juan Pierre would probably move to center field.

Draft day

The Dodgers have the 15th overall selection in the first-year player draft, which begins today. Logan White, assistant general manager, said that while the Dodgers are looking to add depth at pitching and in the middle infield, the club will stick with its strategy of picking the player with the highest ceiling.

Among the players the Dodgers could select is Aaron Hicks, a right-handed pitcher and outfielder out of Long Beach Wilson High. The Dodgers recently worked out Hicks at Dodger Stadium.

Loaiza signs with White Sox

Esteban Loaiza, who was designated for assignment on May 24, signed a one-year deal with the Chicago White Sox. The Dodgers are on the hook for the rest of the $6.85 million Loaiza is owed for this season, minus the prorated share of the major-league minimum, which will be picked up by the White Sox.

Loaiza was 1-2 with a 5.63 earned-run average for the Dodgers in seven games (three starts). Loaiza’s agent, John Boggs, said the 36-year-old right-hander continued to work out in the Los Angeles area after parting ways with the Dodgers.
