Hahn moves to save airport pay

Share

City Councilwoman Janice Hahn on Tuesday called for measures to protect the earnings of airport skycaps and other aviation service workers who rely on tips for a large part of their incomes.

Hahn introduced a motion during a City Council meeting, asking that the city attorney draft proposals to ensure that fees imposed by airlines for passenger services actually go to the workers who provide those services. Any resulting measure would apply to hundreds of baggage handlers, attendants for people with disabilities and skycaps who provide curbside check-in at the city’s airports.

Skycaps say much of their income came from tips until a few years ago when some airlines began charging $2 for their services.

The fee was collected by the airlines and created a disincentive for passengers to tip, they contend.
