The Israel Film Festival celebrates the 60th anniversary of the founding of Israel with the start of its 23rd edition tonight at the Cinerama Dome, featuring the U.S. premiere of “Secrets,” directed by Avi Nesher and starring Fanny Ardant. The festival will offer nearly 60 features (including “Noodle,” starring Mili Avital and BaoQi Chen, pictured, about a Chinese boy left in care of Tel Aviv flight attendant), documentaries and student films at Laemmle’s Sunset 5, Royal Theater and Fallbrook 7 through June 26 (israelfilmfestival.com). . . . Also starting tonight is the American Cinematheque’s Recent Spanish Cinema XIV at the Egyptian Theatre. The series highlights 12 features -- including several American premieres and three short films -- through June 22. It begins with 2007’s “Solitary Fragments,” directed by Jaime Rosales, a drama about two women whose lives are changed by the Madrid terrorist bombings. Other U.S. premieres include the 2007 Goya Award-winning drama “Seven Billiard Tables” on Sunday and Ventura Pons’ 2007 drama “Barcelona (A Map),” June 21. . . . The Aero Theatre will hold a “Wizard of Oz” costume contest Sunday afternoon before showing the 1939 classic starring Judy Garland as Dorothy and Terry as Toto (americancinematheque.com). . . . The Echo Park Film Center’s latest eclectic offering is Slamfest: A Night of Animation, which tonight spotlights films made by inmates at the Antelope Valley State Prison (echoparkfilmcenter .org). . . . Catch disco fever Friday at the Silent Movie Theatre with the infamous 1980 musical “Can’t Stop the Music,” starring the Village People, Bruce Jenner and Steve Guttenberg. . . . On Tuesday, the theater offers “A Labrat Matinee: Daytime Does Dark.” Presented by Dublab, the evening “matinee” has music videos, short films and “eye-melting magic!” (silentmovietheatre.com)
