THE ENABLER

Share

If you ask nicely, the bartender at Dave’s on Broadway in Glendale will show you a framed picture of the deliciously sketchy dive from the early 1900s. The photo depicts a narrow room packed with upright fellows making merry while lorded over by a wealth of trophy animal heads, including the face of one of the most heinous beasts the Enabler has ever seen. It’s some kind of fish, as if hell had an aquarium and in-house taxidermy. Its gaze could drive a man to madness.

At some point the creature was removed, but Dave’s has likely been the catalyst for much madness since. Its dilapidated exterior and wickedly old sign beckon the ebulliently drunk and unemployed screenwriters.

On a recent Tuesday night, the Enabler sipped a stiff scotch and soda while a woman in white capri pants danced cheek-to-cheek with a staggering fellow in saggy jeans for almost half an hour. She mouthed the words to Willie Nelson and Rolling Stones tunes before suddenly ditching her partner for a younger man. We should all be so lucky -- two dance partners, a rowdy bar and not a rough beast in sight.
