Southwest Airlines Co., the only big U.S. carrier that’s still profitable, will add nine flights while United Airlines exits three cities as it struggles with this year’s 41% surge in jet fuel prices.

Southwest’s expanded service includes Denver, Oakland and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., where rivals are shrinking. UAL Corp.’s United said it was ending service in Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, Fla., and Nagoya, Japan.
