Mets get split as Delgado drives in nine

Carlos Delgado revived his season with three big swings at Yankee Stadium.

Delgado set a Mets record with nine runs batted Friday in a 15-6 rout of the New York Yankees in the opener of a rare two-stadium Subway Series doubleheader.

Sidney Ponson (5-1) pitched a gem in the second game, silencing Delgado and the rest of the Mets in a 9-0 victory at Shea Stadium.

In the day game, Delgado had a two-run double in the fifth off Edwar Ramirez, then hit his 12th career grand slam in the sixth, a drive against Ross Ohlendorf that landed in one of the last rows of bleachers in right-center. Delgado also had a three-run homer in the eighth off La- Troy Hawkins, a drive into a corridor beyond the right-field wall.

Dave Kingman drove in eight runs for the Mets in an 11-0 victory at the Dodgers on June 4, 1976.

After both teams got police escorts for their rush-hour bus trips to Shea Stadium, Bobby Abreu went four for four with a walk and three RBIs.

Ponson outpitched Pedro Martinez with six shutout innings, and the Bronx Bombers broke loose in Queens for their first win in four Subway Series games this season.

Martinez (2-2) gave up six runs and six hits in 5 2/3 innings while losing his second consecutive start.
