* at Chicago White Sox 5, Chicago Cubs 1: Carlos Quentin, Brian Anderson and Jim Thome homered to back Mark Buehrle’s seven strong innings as the White Sox answered the Cubs’ sweep last weekend with one of their own. Cubs Manager Lou Piniella was ejected for the first time this season for arguing a checked swing in the second inning.

* Tampa Bay 4, at Pittsburgh 3: Backup catcher Shawn Riggans homered and drove in two runs to help lift the Rays half a game ahead of Boston atop the AL East. Andy Sonnanstine (9-3) improved to 6-0 after a Rays loss.

* at Minnesota 5, Milwaukee 0: Kevin Slowey (5-6) breezed through his fourth straight dominant start, beating Ben Sheets (9-2) and the Brewers with a three-hit shutout. Delmon Young’s two-run homer also helped the Twins to a majors-best 14-4 interleague record.

* at Houston 3, Boston 2: Former Red Sox Mark Loretta had a pinch-hit run-scoring single in the eighth inning to lift the Astros. Boston’s Josh Beckett, born and raised in nearby Spring, Texas, took his third no-decision in six starts.

* San Francisco 11, at Oakland 1: Rich Aurilia homered and matched his career-high with five RBIs to help the Giants get their first series win in the Bay Area rivalry in two years. Jonathan Sanchez (8-4) won his fifth straight road start.

* at Florida 4, Arizona 3: Jorge Cantu hit a game-ending single and Hanley Ramirez hit a tying home run for the Marlins. After Ramirez’s home run, Jeremy Hermida doubled and took third on a wild pitch to set up Cantu’s single.

* St. Louis 9, at Kansas City 6: Jason LaRue drove in four runs with a home run and a wind-blown triple, and Albert Pujols also homered. Every Cardinals batter had a hit except Adam Kennedy, who scored twice and drove in a run.

* at Detroit 4, Colorado 3: Dane Sardinha hit a two-run triple for his first major league hit to help the Tigers to a three-game sweep. Detroit, winner of 15 of its last 18, climbed above .500 for the first time this season.

* at Toronto 1, Atlanta 0: A.J. Burnett pitched seven shutout innings and Alex Rios drove in the only run. Burnett (8-7) struck out a season-high 11 and walked four -- one intentionally -- while giving up four hits.

* at New York Mets 3, New York Yankees 1: Oliver Perez (6-5) limited the Yankees to one run and three hits over seven innings and the Mets won the Subway Series, 4-2, for only the second time since interleague play started in 1997.

* at Washington 3, Baltimore 2 (12 innings): Ronnie Belliard hit a two-run homer in the 12th inning to lift the Nationals over the Orioles in front of 39,824 -- the largest crowd in the three-month history of Nationals Park.

* at Texas 5, Philadelphia 1: Eric Hurley (1-1) pitched into the sixth inning to earn his first major league win and Chris Davis homered for the Rangers. Hurley gave up one run and five hits over 5 2/3 innings in his fourth big league start.

* Seattle 9, at San Diego 2: Ichiro Suzuki was five for five to tie his career high, Adrian Beltre and Jeff Clement homered, and the Mariners beat Jake Peavy (5-5) for a sweep of the Padres. Seattle won a season-high third in a row.

* Cincinnati 9, at Cleveland 5: Bronson Arroyo (5-7) won for the first time since May 26 and bounced back from his worst start by giving up two runs over six innings.

* Angels 1, at Dodgers 0: The Angels avoided a sweep by scoring their first run of the three-game series.
