A Los Angeles Police Department officer shot a suspected gunman in Cypress Park on Friday evening in an area that has seen a dramatic surge in gang violence in recent months.

The shooting occurred as police were responding to a report of gunfire at Loosmore Street, in northeast Los Angeles, shortly after 6 p.m., according to LAPD Sgt. Fernando Carrasco.

When officers arrived at Loosmore and Aragon Avenue, they shot one man, but no details of the incident were available, Carrasco said.

He said the man was taken to County-USC Medical Center but wasn’t sure of his condition. The officer involved in the shooting wasn’t hurt, Carrasco said.

Vanessa Reyes, 25, who described herself as a witness, said the man shot was 22 years old and had been standing on the street talking to a friend. She said an undercover police officer had pulled up and tried to arrest the man. She said the man tried to run away.

The incident occurred in the same area of Cypress Park where 36-year-old Marcos Salas was shot and killed Feb. 21.

Minutes after that shooting, officers pulled over the suspected gunmen’s vehicle in Glassell Park and found themselves in a gun battle when one of the suspects began firing an AK-47. None of the officers were injured, but one gunman was killed and another wounded.
