Big battles, a ‘Big Give,’ one very big adventure

You will talk about: “10,000 BC.” Hollywood has been plundering deep history for the last several years, looking for special-effects-heavy battle stories that will appeal to video game-loving teen boys. And so, in the spirit of “Beowulf” and “300,” we have “10,000 BC.” It doesn’t look like our cup of mastodon tusk tea, but “300” killed at the box office last year with a similar release date. You could talk about: “Oprah’s Big Give.” Is there anything Oprah can’t do? Talk show and magazine? Done. TV channel? On its way. Reality TV show? Out this week. We’re a little fuzzy on the details, but “Oprah’s Big Give” sends 10 contestants across the country with a lot of money and asks them to do good with it. Think “America’s Next Great Philanthropist.” (Today)

Apparently a lot of you want to talk about: “Into the Wild” on DVD. This column is no swag magnet, but we do regularly receive DVDs in the mail. Seven co-workers asked if they could borrow it -- an all-time high. (Tuesday)

You could talk about: “The Real Housewives of New York City.” Ay caramba! Will America ever tire of watching television shows about rich people? As if wealthy teens and housewives in Orange County weren’t enough, Bravo is now giving us a peek into the lives of five New York socialites. The show’s website is packed with words like “galas,” “the Hamptons” and “elite private schools.” Real socialites avoid the cameras, but whatever. (Tuesday)

We suggest you talk about: A band called Dr. Dog. We just moved into a new house with a big porch and a view. The last tenants left a grill, and we keep fantasizing about summer barbecues. The soundtrack will be from these dudes from Philly, who have a lazy roots pop sound. Their home-recorded rarities collection, “Passed Away,” comes this week. We’ll play it and dream of summer.
