A U.S. marshal guarding a foreign dignitary came upon a robbery in progress at a North Hollywood auto parts store Tuesday and shot and critically wounded a suspect.

The incident occurred about 5:45 p.m. at an AutoZone store near Vineland Avenue and Magnolia Boulevard.

Two marshals were protecting the chief of police of the Central American nation of Belize, who was in Los Angeles for a gang summit, when they stopped at the store, according to Los Angeles Police Officer April Harding.

One of the marshals walked into the store as the suspect, reportedly holding cash and a butcher knife, ran out, Harding said.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital after being shot. Harding said the suspect may have had an accomplice.
