Picturing story-time classics
Rabbits, rainbows and bears, oh my! Skip down memory lane and explore the classic illustrations of childhood with “Over Rainbows and Down Rabbit Holes: The Art of Children’s Books,” opening at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art on Saturday.
More than 70 illustrations created specifically for children’s books are featured from the collection of Santa Barbara residents Zora and Les Charles. Some of the works on display include “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” by Beatrix Potter, “The House at Pooh Corner” by A.A. Milne and illustrated by Ernest Shepard, and “The Travels of Babar” by Jean de Brunhoff.
The exhibit is a collaboration between SBMA and the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, Mass. Carle is best known for the 1969 classic “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”
The museum also announced the reopening this month of the Robert and Marlene Veloz Children’s Gallery, to promote the connection between visual and verbal literacy.
