Ubisoft widens deal with Clancy

Ubisoft Entertainment, the French video game publisher behind the popular series of games based on Tom Clancy’s novels, said it had broadened its 8-year-old licensing agreement with the bestselling author to also include movies, books and television shows.

Ubisoft won’t be paying royalties under the new deal. Edward Williams, an analyst at BMO Capital Markets, estimated that Ubisoft had paid as much as 40 million euros, or almost $62 million, for the lifetime rights to several Clancy franchises including “Ghost Recon,” “Rainbow Six,” “EndWar,” “Splinter Cell” and an upcoming air-combat title.

The license does not include other books written by Clancy.
