A man was convicted Friday of killing a transient whose dismembered body parts were found scattered around San Diego County.

A jury found Gerald Nash, 62, guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Allen Hawes. He faces 50 years to life in prison when he is sentenced May 6.

Prosecutors said Nash, an adult bookstore employee, carefully planned Hawes’ death and recorded his plans in notebooks. Nash claimed he was framed.

During the trial, Nash testified that he did not kill Hawes and that he had befriended him and given him food, money and places to store belongings. The two met at the Ever So Naughty adult video store.

Prosecutors told the jury that Nash meticulously planned the murder, and even had a homemade silencer for a gun and a book describing how to get away with a crime.

A deputy medical examiner testified that Hawes died of a single bullet wound.

Authorities said Hawes’ torso was found along a riverbank on Feb. 26, 2007. A day later, other body parts were found along highways.
